[/ QUOTE ] I like having a Jackson V with a trem, so I'd probably be more likely to trade it.

Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong.

When I think EMG60, I think of old school Metallica.
If you detune, would the EMG81 be better for a sharper attack / less mud than the EMG85?

James used to use dual 81s, then he switched to the 60 in the neck.
And the 85 won't get muddy no matter what position you use it in, IMO, but I prefer it in the bridge.

Yep, the 85/60 is in my Dinky HX, and it's a great combo. I tune that guitar to D, sometimes to Drop C. No mud whatsoever in EMGs in any tuning.
I still say 81 60 will be better then 85 60. The 81 to me is more aggresive sounding. Sorry to confuse you. Just buy both ,try them and then sell the other 1 on ebay. But 81 is THE metal pickup.
Well I'm more of a thrash metalhead myself! Nothing wrong with Deathmeatal, for those (mushies) who can't handle it!! But I just put an 81 at the bridge in my sl1, and it RIPS, as far as metal is concerned!! Very clean, not that I like clean sound! As far as bottom end I think that is more your amps/cabinet job, or lack of, not your pickup!
I have an 81 in my bridge, and it slays everything. My friend swears by his 85 in the bridge though, I suppose it depends on the clarity of the tone you want, an 81 is more distorted to my ears.
I always see people debating about the 81 and 85 but there is never much mention about the 89. I use this pickup in just about everything. It's a 85 and SA in the same housing. Pull the push/pull and the SA gives some really nice clean tones. My most often used clean tone is both the neck and bridge in SA mode combined. Very nice tone. For the popular 81b/85n combo if you put a 89 in the neck instead you can get a couple more tones and don't give anything up.
