I just wired mine to run on 18 volts and it actually sounds more organic/less sterile. Opens it up quite a bit.

EMGs in a KV? Absolutely.

For Death Metal? Definitely.

Try them. They may or may not be for you.

85 in the bridge with either an 81 or 60 in the neck!

fuck yeah,i'm glad I brought this thread up.How's the 60 in the neck? Does it have a liquidy sound? I had a 60 on my 85 gibby V a few years ago and it was the cleanest pup i ever heard for single striging notes and stuff..not sure how it would sound for solos and the like...

The 60 is awesome, a little brighter than the 81. It's definitely got a real nice liquid type sound, great for both rhythm and solos, IMO.

+1 for the 85.
I'm not an EMG fan myself, but have tried several guitars with the 81 and 85 in the bridge, the 85 sounded alot better to my ears. Just as described above, that is.

I.ve tried both and I like the 81 in the bridge. I think the 85 in the neck is a waste I'd go 60. So 81 60 and you got a range of sound. I play an Engl Fireball and its a great combo

I like both the 81 and 85 in the bridge, and I only use the bridge pickup. I have found that on a neck thru guitar with alder and maple, or even with a maple neck thru a mahogany body, the 81 is way to brittle, so I put an 85 in, much more bass. Now on a set neck guitar with all mahogany, the 81 is actually a little better. Bolt on with alder body and maple neck, either one is awsome, because the body is the wood that makes the difference. I love passives and actives equally, they both give a different flavor. Jack.

I have 81's in the bridge on all my guitars except I have an 89 on my ibanez. The 85/89 does cut through the mix a little better but i don't think it chunks as well as the 81.

I like both the 81 and 85 in the bridge, but the 81 always seemed a little bright to me and that's why I prefer the 85 there. I've even got the 85 in the bridge on my LP Studio that's ALL mahogany (with the chrome 25th anniversary 81 in the neck). I had both chrome 81s in my old Hamer Special that was mahogany with 3/8" maple top and I had the tone rolled back to 5 most of the time.

When I think EMG60, I think of old school Metallica.

If you detune, would the EMG81 be better for a sharper attack / less mud than the EMG85?

I have 89's in a custom RR. To be honest, it sounds killer, but I never use it, as it is my only guitar out of 14 that has EMG's. So it sits. I don't have the heart to mod it.
