I guess my two cents on the mask is the same as it would be for KISS, King Diamond, or any other musician who disguises their face. It's a gimmick and makes us talk about them... just what they hoped for.

I saw him at the San Diego Comic Con at Dave McKean's booth. Dave McKean is an illustrator/designer that has created artwork for some of Buckethead's CDs. He was talking to Dave at the booth and I happened to be standing next to Buckethead. A friend of mine was backstage at one of his shows and saw him without his mask as well.

It's not a photoshop. In the higher resolution version of that photo, you can clearly see that he is wearing a fake (bought at halloween store) finger.

It's not a gimmick. Actually, it was part of the act with one of his first bands, the Deli Creeps.

If you ever saw them preform, they're not just a band on stage, they're a stage act... it's pretty hillarious.
