Is that to say a recessed floyd (as say, one could order from the Custom Shop...) won't allow for ANY pulling up? I'm thinking around 2 and a half step above the fretted note...

Huh? Recessed was made for pulling up. Non-recessed you can also pull up, just not as far. And the semi-recess was so you could pull up a little more before they went to fully recessed. Personally, I like non-recessed, as the neck angle is tilted back more and puts the bridge higher off the body similar to the bridge of a Les Paul.

How did you get the 1988? That route was most common on late 89 to early 1990 guitars... It was only a standard for several months and was quickly replaced by the full recessed.

The Charvel Model 3DR was only made in 1988. As I mentioned, I have two of them. Both have this route. That is where I get 1988.
Actually, I was referring to ParaP14... afaik, this route wasn't widely used on USA models until mid-late 1989. The 3DR is the first guitar that featured this route. USAs were still fully non-recessed at this point, I'm pretty sure.

My '89 KV has the partial route and I actually like it. Functionality of a recess with proper string height (off the body) and playabilty which gets lost for me on anything but a GMW recessed froyd trem (Lee will actually sit the trem above instead of in the recess so the guitar feels like a non-recess with trem all the way down to the body (unlike Jackson and most everyone else - which makes them sit way down in there - but I digress)

I have a few USA Jacksons (Ontarios with SD plates) that have this route. It is bevelled back from the top to a depth of about 1/4". It is definitly the "best of both worlds" for those that do not like recessed FRs.
