Probably to fall more in line with regular USA Select build specs - the SL got H-S-S and H-H, but everything else had only H-H as pickup options, so rather than have H-S on one model, they switched it to H-H. In doing that, they had to lose the slanted board and go with straight routes to conform to their other routing templates.
As well, they had to change the scale to 25.5" to conform to the other USA Select specs.

If the head or neck are something spectacular or matching the body graphic/color/figured wood, I can see that point, but in reality you've seen one ebony-boarded regular pointyhead sharkfinned bound head and neck, you've seen them all. In a case like this, the more important detail is the graphic itself rather than a full shot.

It's a very early 1990...I think the serial is 212 or something close to that.
