I think they do different shades of trans black, and obviously any colouring in the wood has an impact.
I have a CS XTRR on order which I've spec'd to be the same colour as Danny Spitz's guitars (a light trans black), but instead of specing the colour, the Spitz guitar is referenced on the w/o.
Popular is not the same as good

I sold a Gibson LPC in trans black quilt to FirebirdV(Chris) and he sold it to someone else here. It had a nice top. Maybe the present owner will post a pic of it.

The Trans Black we do begins with a dye to stain the top. As you all know, each piece of wood is different, so each piece takes the stain different. This results in different shades of Trans Black on each guitar.
