Re: How many guys here have had shrinking ebony pr

SLATQH, that's a pretty common seasonal issue, especially for you new englanders.

funny thing, i never oiled a board before i got to this place 5 years ago. at the time, i had 2-3 guitars, a rhoads LTD being one of them. i think pebber (current owner) can attest to the board's condition. never had a split, crack, or any kind of issue whatsoever.

after being here for a little bit, i was lemon oiling every string change. then i realized how completely retarded that was, so i knocked that off. i also cringe a little at the whole lemon oil thing, but that's another issue altogether.

you shouldn't oil the board much more than 2-3 times a year, and don't put a 1/2 gallon of oil on the board when you're doing it, either; over oiling can loosen frets, which could cause many of the fret issues that you see in older guitars.

fett, i hear ya on the old wood thing, but really, you can't suggest that the high end guitars that are made here are freshly cut. i certainly can't say for sure, but i highly doubt that they gave up on using dried wood. oh, i also finally got around to mailing you that binding strip the other day...sorry bout that!

Re: How many guys here have had shrinking ebony pr

Yah, I was guilty of overdoing it with lemon oil on my first soloist.

Im still mad I sold that sucker. Perefect shape, all black, NOTHING wrong with it. I bought it off a board member for 800$ at the time (2001) and sold it for 900$ when I needed the funds.

The next guitar I bought was an SL1 off ebay that had been played , but it played great and looked cool with it's "satin" refin. I sold it to a board member after another "I needed money" episode. The thirs one I bought was a snakeskin that I sold to Ivan on the board. It had some shrinkage, and some sharpened frets. Although I had my tech do a 100$ job before I sent it off to him, and he claims it plays great now after a setup by him.

Just annoys me, I wanna get another soloist, and im worried and paranoid. It seems people only wanna pawn off their gear with "hidden issues". Unfortunately I cant afford a new one from a local sponsor as a new guitar shipped to Canada is a REALLY pricy thing. I also feel that buying off Ebay is a good thing, but not for some gear like high end guitars. Theres jsut too many guys pawning off unwanted gear with unmentioned blems or issues, and I want a keeper.

But in any other guitar with a maple or rosewood board, ive never had any shrinkage issues. Hopefully it's not an overly common issue!

That'll work. Jimmy D'Acquisto, the
acoustic Guitar maker, uses 10W30 or 10W40 motor oil.
Hell, Jackson recommended vaseline in their owner's manual. Baby oil, or anything that's got mineral oil, will work.

I recently chatted with a fellow who had a newer USA JAckson, and mentioned he had a hump in his neck develope. e!

My new soloist had a hump as well near the first two frets. Sure makes for a crappy sounding guitar. The warranty tech said its common here in Vegas, but none of my rosewood guitars have had that happen.

I know that these boards are great for discussing issues like this, but if you ever want a handy reference book on caring for your guitar, have a look at this: How to Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great by Dan Erlewine

Along that same line, the custom I ordered has a ziricote fingerboard. I know that its similar to ebony in both density and tone, but does anyone know if it requires similar care as far as maintenance? Lacking of knowledge I just intend to treat it as I would any ebony, with periodic lemon oil.

I've also got a unfinished Pau Ferro neck on the way from warmoth, any ideas on how I should care for that? I have no experience with pau ferro outside of fingerboards. Would you lemon oil the neck?

dan erlewine, fwiw, says lemon oil is more of a cleaner and will dry out your board. he would have you put raw linseed oil on it. raw linseed oil is hard to find, so i use boiled linseed oil. the only difference being that boiled drys faster, so you want to wipe it off before it dries on the fretboard.

absolutely, my ebony, maple, and rosewood all shrunk down to zero. they shrunk so much I can't even see them anymore.
there were many factors that caused the shrinking.

Thanks Don. Just bought some of the fret board stuff. You should be paid a commission. I was going to buy some tung oil at my repair shop this week.

i'm a boiled linseed guy myself. the only difference is that the boiled dries faster. that said, it's not like it dries like krazy glue. put a bit on over a few frets, let it sit a couple of minutes and wipe it off. if it's a little gummy, put a little bit more on there, then wipe it off right away.

I just went out and bought some lemon oil last night. I was never really concerned about oiling my boards before, because none of them looked like they needed it. My new cheapie SX however, had a pretty dry looking fretboard when I took it out of the box. It's a gorgeous piece of rosewood, but looked as dry as a dust fart. Last night I applied lemon oil to it twice. I put some on, let it sit for 10 minutes, and then wiped it off. The board looks 50 times better now. I never realized it could make such a difference. I'll probably do each of my guitars next time I change strings.
