SLATQH, that's a pretty common seasonal issue, especially for you new englanders.
funny thing, i never oiled a board before i got to this place 5 years ago. at the time, i had 2-3 guitars, a rhoads LTD being one of them. i think pebber (current owner) can attest to the board's condition. never had a split, crack, or any kind of issue whatsoever.
after being here for a little bit, i was lemon oiling every string change. then i realized how completely retarded that was, so i knocked that off. i also cringe a little at the whole lemon oil thing, but that's another issue altogether.
you shouldn't oil the board much more than 2-3 times a year, and don't put a 1/2 gallon of oil on the board when you're doing it, either; over oiling can loosen frets, which could cause many of the fret issues that you see in older guitars.
fett, i hear ya on the old wood thing, but really, you can't suggest that the high end guitars that are made here are freshly cut. i certainly can't say for sure, but i highly doubt that they gave up on using dried wood. oh, i also finally got around to mailing you that binding strip the other day...sorry bout that!
