i prefer quilt. most flame is too "tight" and looks fake to me. the attractive thing to me about quilt is how it isn't in tight straight lines, the grain seems to "bounce" and the patterns are less obvious. i don't know how to explain it....

I always thought curly was like an in-between mixture of both flame and quilt.

They are all just imperfections in the wood that give them their special and desired appearance. I believe Flame and Curly are the same and quilt is just quilt, wide wavy like pattern that almost looks like ripples in the water. Fiddleback is a type of flame or curl that has real tight skinny flames or curls (stripes for lack of better term), chevron is another type of flame or curl that has wider stripes than the fidleback. Thats my understanding.

A Chevron pattern is also typically angled upward toward the center of the guitar. Hence the term Chevron.

As I am given to understand it (and its important to note as Venom said, alot of wood specialists disagree about these things even. I am far from a wood specialist) flame has two varieties, eastern and western. Eastern is the tight close flame, western is the wide quilty flame. Some call it tiger stripe flame. Then there is quilt which is simply quilt. Curly some seem to refer to as wild maple and tends to curl upwards in wierd patterns. I've also heard some also call it Angel Wing maple because of the pattern. I considered getting one of those wild maple tops, but they show up best in traditional sunbursts such as cherry, tobacco, amber or natural. The other problem is it might cost more because you would have to send in a picture to show the kind of figure you are looking for.

Some say you should specify the quality of the top for customs but really that can be deceptive, Alot of people here did not specify and got nice tops so I doubt the custom shop is gonna give me some AA grade piece of crap. Plus I did send a color sample for the blue/green burst so they may try and match the figure (the top in the picture I sent was AAAAA) to best represent the color I sent. It's really all good IMO. As Kev said, a nice piece of wood is a nice piece of wood.

I do prefer quilt and western flame to the tight eastern flame. I can't explain why.

None of them! I prefer solid colors and graphic finishes over flames or quilt. They kinda seem old fashioned to me [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

I like em both but it depends on the color too. We had a PRS cst 22 artist with a quilt top in blue mateo that was stunning yet we also have a natural flame cst22 that is also killer. So i just like both dpending on the color and the guitar

This was one of my old PRS quilts and yeah a lighter color shows the wood better. I lean towards quilts rather than flames to answer the original question

EXACTLY! Leave that shit to Gibsons. Give me an evil paint job, camo, lightning,...any day. One of the reasons for Jackson/Charvel's fame is the cool paint jobs they came up with.

I don't prefer one over the other...as someone else said, a good piece of wood is a good piece of wood. That bieng said, I own more flame tops than quilts.

I dig them both - depends on the guitar. It can add some serious class to a fine instrument if that's what you are looking for. I prefer my Les Pauls as black beauties, but boutique guitars should have really pretty wood, in my opinion. Here are my PRS custom 24 Artist, and my custom Qucksilver. For the record, the Quicksilver blows away the PRS.
