Re: Quilts versus Flames

Ed Roman is a nasty kurmudgenly lying bastard. That being said, Ed Roman does not build guitars - he employs some very talented people in his custom shop. Those people in the shop treated me very well, and built me the finest guitar I've ever had the pleasure of playing in 30 years. It is really, really that good. I'm no novice. By the way, a certain Grover Jackson designed the Quicksilver neck. That is why it plays so well. I have met Mr. Roman personally, and I do not like him, but I will play any guitar that his shop forman, Alan Dreher builds. That man is a saint. Bash Ed all you want - he deserves it all.

Hahah, fair enough.

I'm actually headed to Vegas in a few weeks, and thinking about entering the lair that is his store. Worthwhile, or should I stay away?

I didn't want to speak it outloud but the finish I want on my custom Jackson is based off a...JET guitar's finish, Carribean Burst. Yep an Ed Roman affiliate (are those actually made in his custom shop? I don't know).

Yeah, if you are in Vegas, go see the store - it's like a freakin' guitar amusement park. 6,000 axes under one roof - who wouldn't like that? You will find plenty of stuff to drool over. Jet guitars are made in North Carolina. It's one man in a wood shop, making 4 guitars a month. That's it - no Ed involvement. Those things are real works of art - talk about quilt tops - holy hell. www.jetguitars.com When you are in Vegas, you can ask to see Alan for a shop tour between 10 am and 4pm. It really is all done by hand. Good woodshop - they can show you all the different varieties of flames and quilts in different wood species, on guitars they are building. I'd better stop, cause someone may get the idea that I'm pimping Ed. Nope - just the wood shop.

Dave,

Welcome to the JCF ..I really hope you hang around a while
Don't worry - I'll smack her if it comes to that. You do not sell guitars to buy shoes. You skimp on food to buy shoes! ~Mrs Tekky 06-03-08~

Quilts are really nice, but flames on certain guitars are awesome

Fess up Kev, you are just saying that in the hopes that he might eventually sell that Ed Roman guitar to you someday

All kidding aside I'd have to give serious consideration to that guitar. Based on your review and its looks. But seeing the bastard's name there on the headstock might be a bit much.

Thanks for the link to the JET site. I hope Jackson does that finish justice. Those are some fantastic guitars.

None of them! I prefer solid colors and graphic finishes over flames or quilt. They kinda seem old fashioned to me

EXACTLY! Leave that shit to Gibsons. Give me an evil paint job, camo, lightning,...any day. One of the reasons for Jackson/Charvel's fame is the cool paint jobs they came up with.

Heck yeah! I do love a nice flame top:

Catapultam habeo. Nisi pecuniam omnem mihi dabis, ad caput tuum saxum immane mittam!

Re: Quilts versus Flames

I think something that personally turns me off for flame tops is that the matchbook effect doesnt react as good as quilted, since its abunch of lines running into eachother, where was quilted usually meld together to form a mirror illusion

Flames can still look great though

YOA, you've got some nice guitars, but maybe you better lay off buying any more until you get some strings.
