I don`t dig it too much, but that shouldn`t matter to anyone. It is unique for sure. And it does scream Vai to me.
How does it play? I bet it would be great for playing in front of a crowd, because it does have that unique graphic treatment. People love that stuff.
Be sure your friend holds on to that one. And if he doesn`t, make sure you get it.
