It's actually some kind of solution that was applied with in 1/2 cm of each fret. It won't come off. It's like some kind of glue or something.

What was it for?

I'd hate to have that stuff on my fretboard, I spend a loong time just trying to get rid of it.

I have no idea... I think it actually might be from pressure being applied to the board now that I look closer at it.
