lol... this amuses... every is finding the smallest of detail mismatches but surely the biggest arguement is the finish? solid or sparkle??

It's definitely a taped over Jackson logo. I've got a couple of screenshots at home, and you can see the big "J" pretty clearly. IIRC someone else had screenshots of the Charvel plate, too.
And that'd be correct for '86, too, as the last "Charvels" (or whatever you want to call them) had Jackson logos with Charvel plates.

P.S.- There's nearly no way that the original was a sparkle finish. The sparkles absolutely scream out intensly in stage lighting, so you'd be able to tell big time in the movie.
It's something you've got to experience in person - still pictures just don't convey it at all. Check this little vid on the Warmoth site for an example:

i thnk it's a sparkle finish in the movie, but the low lighting makes it look more red. when steve starts playing his spot, look at the cutaways; they shine pretty well, which makes me think that it's the sparkle doing its job.
just a thought. that said,

and i agree, it's a cool lookin guitar, for sure.
here's a reference to a finer sparkle:
from far enough away, it's more uniform, less sparkly.

I once was so crazy and did a frame by frame analysis
One can definitely see the Charvel plate, but I never saw the Jackson logo, not even the "J". But you can see that the logo is covered with something, because it reflects the light different.

I've been thinking of doing a custom in a green sparkle like that, but wanted it to be more subtle. Would love more pics or details on that guitar's finish, if you have them.
here's a finished shot where you can see that from a distance, it's not a crazy sparkle:
that particular guitar was shot first with a metallic silver basecoat that was leftover silver from this paintjob:
from a distance, not so sparkly, but close up, or in different lighting, you get this:
lay some house of kolor organic green kandy coat on top of that color, and you will get the finish as shown above. then you clear over that, and you're good to go. and since kandy is just tinted clear color, the more green you put on top of it, the darker it will be.
