  • Just bought a new PC-1

Deciding I had too much gear and wanting some cash with the holidays coming up, I just sold some amps, effects and my SL2H LTD Trans Purple Burst. I wasn't expecting to replace the SL2H, but since I did alright with the amps, my wife (the boss) was cool with me replacing the SL2H.

I decided for a change and spotted a Red Rum PC-1 on e-bay that was signed by Phil Collen for a promotion that PETA was doing promoting Phil's vegetarian lifestyle (you may have seen it). The guitar was given away as part of a contest. The winner was a gal that wasn't a guitarist and she sold it shortly after winning it on ebay. I received the guitar today and it is brand new. Red Rum would not have been my first pick, but now that I have seen it in person, It is really growing on me. Photos don’t do the red rum PC-1’s justice.

Anyway, I am a bit perplexed about this instrument. If it really was brand new from Jackson for a promotion, it would probably have been set up with .10’s from the factory tuned to E right? Instead, it is set up with .12’s or heavier intonated to D tuning. The winner of the contest was not a guitarist and wouldn’t have had the guitar dropped and intonated with .12’s and D tuning. So I am still trying to figure out more about this guitar’s journey before the contest.

The guitar is signed by Phil and below he wrote “vegetarian” underneath it. My thoughts are…at a minimum, the “Vegetarian” has got to go. Thought I would get your guys opinion on whether to remove Phil’s sig on the front. I am assuming his sig on the front wouldn’t increase the value. What are your thoughts…should I remove it?

Any thoughts, or additional information about this particular guitar is appreciated.

        Pics???

I'd definitely remove the vegetarian wording and probably PC's signature too, but that's just me.

Nice guiitar for sure but I'd take the vegetarian crapola off in a heartbeat. His sig would probably come off as well if it were me. For me, it's a case of liking the guitar more than the player. Just my .02.

Hey Scott, congrats on the PC1. Now where is my SL2H TransPurpleburst?! Just PM me the tracking number. I'll give you a ring tomorrow as well. I actually just acquired a new PC1 Chlorine from a trade as well. Very cool geetars. I dunno about Phil's signature on your guitar and all though. Not much for autographs myself.

Heavy strings and D tuning... sounds like they set it up so Phil could play it.
He uses HEAVY strings and metal picks.
I saw the auction, was curious how that one would end.

"Vegan".... `def`... An ancient Native American word for "lousy hunter"....... hehehehe

Yeah, vegan gotta go, but I'd prolly leave the sig because it probably would increase the resale value.

If God wanted us to be vegetarians he wouldn't have made animals taste like meat!

Thanks for your replies guys. I think I am going to get rid of the "vegetarian" and keep the sig. After doing some research, I have determined that Phils used this guitar on tour. According to the contact at PETA, "Phil used the guitar on tour several times, including at one of their NJ tour dates. After using it, Phil autographed it and had it sent to our HQ in Norfolk, VA."

So that is pretty cool. I have a guitar that Phil played on tour.

I'd leave the vegetarian too for future sales purposes.

                            Man enjoy that PC1!

It's an incredible guitar. And to have one played by Phil is just too much. When I first read your post and heard 12s the first thing I thought was it was one of Phil's personal PCs. I also agree about photos. I photoed mine several times and I could never truly get it to look as good as it did in person.

                              Yeah Bryan,

That's exactly what made me investigate further. It didn't make sense to me that a brand new contest guitar from Jackson would have 12's and the fact that the winner doesn't play. So I contacted PETA to get more info on the origin to just see if my hunch was correct...and it was. It was indeed a guitar that Phil played at least a few times on the most recent tour.

I have always played with 9's and 10's, but I gotta tell you, with these 12's, this guitar sounds AWESOME. Now I need to develop my finger strength, because I am not sure I want to string this guitar with anything thinner now that I've heard it. Last night aftert playing, my fingers were pretty tired and sore.

And through my rig, these pick-ups sound excellent. I had heard that the Super 3 in the PC-1s sounds thin. Not in the this one. It sounds big, warm and fat, but has good bite. The neck sustainer pickup sounds more modern, a bit more sterile, but in a good EMG kind of way. I still need to put the HS2 through its paces on my clean channel settings.

The sustainer was as good or better than I had hoped. I was a bit worried that it might be kind of gimmicky, or be too sensitive. I was worried that the effect might compromise feel or expression. But to me it is just the opposite. It allows me to enhance expression...the effect can be so precisely controlled, that you never feel like it is overkill or coloring your sound too much. I agree with what others have indicated, the guitar sustains almost indefinitely on its own without the sustainer, so I will probably use it most recording direct using the harmonic mode to simulate speaker feedback.
