  • J0094 - the RESTORATION

so, a while ago we scored what we thought to be J0091..
but it turned out to be the modded J0094 Student Soloist.

    the main issues:

    - it was oversprayed in black (in a non-pro manner)
here you see they even oversprayed part of the fretboard

    - the HB route was done afterwards

    - the SC routes were deepened
(to fit an all EMG pup config.. why? argh..)

    - the pups and some of the HW were aftermarket
(that's will become the easy part)

after hanging out here for more then a year already, and watching some of his work, I asked Mark if he could restore J0094 to it's original condition.

    here's the journey:

(Mark, feel free to add/correct anywhere needed)

finish beeing removed by sanding as Mark pointed out that wood can soak in some of the stripper like a sponge, and it can come back to haunt you later

we thought it would be possible to recuperate the original decal, but turned out to be not the case. it just burned through too quickly because it had already been sanded before.

anyway, I had some spare time correct decals from RW, so not too big of an issue

now, pieces of wood were glued in the pup cavities to make the bottom of the single routes the correct depth,

and to plug the hum route. Epoxy based filler (I think) was used to prevent the outlines of normal shrinkage to become visible too quickly thru the finish later on.

the original SC pup route was re-routed.

as Mark found out, the SD pup routes are different than the standard routes, so a template to match the orignal routes had to be made.

            the primer coating

getting ready for the "white with blue" as logged:
white paint with a blue pearl coat.

            to be continued!

BIG thanks already to Mark for taking his time to explain some procedures as well as to keep me updated all the time.. you RULE!

I'm having a lot of fun doing this Peter, and I am proud to bring this one back to its original glory. Actually, on pic 6, there is no filler to speak of. The wood plug was set in with epoxy. The gray "primer" is actually a spray polyester filler/sealer, and that is what will keep the repair from showing up later.

I thought this thread was about it when I saw "RESTORATION" on the title, then realised the serial isn'T "JA.."

Anyway looks great so far Peter!

Man, that's an interesting job, thanks for posting.

And I CAN wait for the finished product. The building is the coolest phase.

What happened to the bevelling advice when plugging a hole like this?
