  • Quilted or Flamed maple top?

Between those two, which one do you prefer?

I personally think that flamed maple looks nicer, but it's actually very different so in a way both are beautiful... but, I think having a quilted maple top gives it a more unique look, like for a custom made guitar, since quilted maple ain't available as a regular option.

Don't really know about tonal differences though, that must be interesting...

    What are your thoughts?

Tonally there is no difference, I think a good Flame maple looks to busy, while a good Quilt top looks like staring into flames. I do like the one kind of flame maple that has a very wide flame to it, almost looks like quilted maple except its very horizontal in appearance. I like flame maple in a natural finish because it looks more real and I prefer quilt maple in burst finishes because the multi step staining brings out an almost "alive" quality to the quilt figure. My amber sunburst strat when you tilt it different directions in the light, looks like billowing flames. Flame maple tends to always looks the same, So I guess you could say I like all types I love birdseye maple too. Especially heavy birdseye on a clear gloss finished neck.

im not to fond of quilts..... but a nice flame top it awesome, i have a string bass that made of flame maple, except the finger board, the back on that baby is PHAT, it's so perfect plus it's like 2 feet tall so it must have been a bitch to find

                  i like neither.
                  1) i dont like how the top has the connection in the middle, the line pisses me off
                  2) im not much for flashy stuff, tops seem to elegant for my tastes.

I agree, quilts look totally rad on certain guitars while flames look the best on others...That PRS is sic!

I'm a huge quilt fan. I do however like big thick flames on some guitars.

on a non-strat shaped jackson, i'd go for flame. quilted on a strat shape.
