  • how much would you pay for...

I came across what I believe is a 1987 Rhoads (serial # RR2010) with a Dark Purple finish. The guitar has wing damage on both wings but the chips have been halfassed glued back on. It has the usual control layout but there was also a mini toggle. The pickups in it now are EMGs but the covers looked to new to be original.

My question is how much would you pay for this? I would post what the asking price is but I think that is against the rules. Lets just say it is under a grand. If it is infact an '87 is that a good price considering the wing damage?

A USA Rhoads for under a grand is usually a good deal...Unless it is really hammered. And you can post the price here, that rule refers to posting prices from dealers on new guitars.

The cost of repairing the damage and a refin can run $500.00 on up so take that in to consideration. It all depends on the initial price and what the value wolud be after repairs.
      Really? well screw Mark Twain.

the shop is asking $900 for it. I don't really care for the purple color but I thought it was a pretty fair price for USA RR. I'm going to go and give it a better inspection today.

I'd go for it. Its a good price but if the damage is really bad then take it into consideration. Try and haggle too because of the damage.

I love purple! Depending on the extent of damage however, $900 plus repair/refinishing it might be on the high side. Lets say you could get it fixed for $500, do you think you could sell it for a total of $1400 if you had to? Cause thats how much you'll have in it. I think $1400 for a repaired/refinished Rhoads is high. Again, I love the color purple AND Rhoads' but...

How big are the chips? How half-assed glued on are they? If no larger say than a dime or nickel, you could get dark purple nail polish to try to make the chips blend in better. Bottom line is if they are relatively small and you can't see them from 5 feet away, just leave it that way and enjoy the guitar.

As Rudy says, you'll never recover dumping $500 into a re-fin (personally, I prefer a guitar with a couple small chips in original paint over a re-fin). I love purple also, so Rudy or I would probably take it off your hands for $900 if you bought it and changed your mind

I bought my '93 Rhoads (Lightning Sky) last year for about 1200$, and it was in perfect condition (no damages at all, just some minor scratches here and there due to its age) so I think I would go for something around 800 - 1100$, it dependes on how much You want or You the guitar!

I went and checked it out a little closer today. The top horn peeled back about 2 inches but the break was glued back and it is alittle jagged around the edges of the break. I'm going to pass on this one. I've found a cheaper 1 in better shape that i may pick up.

                  Thanks for all the input.

Who gives a shit about the chips... it's an 80's Rhoads and definitely worth the 800-900 bucks to snag it. Buy it!
