why did jackson switch from non-recessed to recessed floyds?

I'd say it would have been market demand - with ESP and Ibanez doing it back in the late 80's, maybe it was seen as the way forward.

I'm happy enough with either, but I much prefer non-recessed, both in terms of feel and appearance....

Don't know exactly why, maybe by popularity. Everybody was on a kick there pulling back like Steve Via in the late 80's into the 90's. I myself really like the recessed Floyd.

i dunno... i have both. recessed in my RR1 and non-Recessed in my Shannon.
and as i had the shannon before the Rhoads its kinda hard to adjust to the lower sitting floyd on the RR. how is the height of the bridges on non floyd bridges(tuneomatic, string through etc.) compared to floyds(both non-recessed and recessed)

A string-thru bridge is definitely higher than a recessed Floyd. I don't have enough guitars to tell you anything else, though

I prefer recessed and sold an ESP custom just to get rid of the non-recessed Floyd. There's something about the feel that I like better

I have an esp and chravel with non recessed and 2 soloists and a Rhoads pro with the recessed - I don't really mind that much which comes a guitar.

I can play on both, but prefer non-recessed. IMO, they look cooler and have that old-school 80s Jackson vibe to it .

Recessed floyds need NO neck angle so less wasted wood. I prefer NON recessed because it feel more comfortable, i played TOM bridges for years. i also can't play hardtails & most kahlers for that reason, the string just feel too close to the body.

I like resessed maybe cuz all my jackson are newer so they all came that way ....

I prefer the top mount, non recessed, all the way.

I prefer non-recessed, as it puts the bridge higher off the body, like a tune-o-matic bridge, with more of a tilted back neck angle. Though, I can deal with a straighter neck and recessed trems as well.

As long as I use Schaller Tremstop for setting up my floyded guitars I definately prefer recessed floyd ))) and it looks way more cool too
