the two guitars I've been playing most lately are my Model 1A & Model 2. Trad trem & non-recessed Floyd. No problem switching between either, and none when I grab a guitar with a recessed Floyd either.

Just like jumping in my wife's car - you switch things around often enough, and the change doesn't bother anymore.

I have no preference. Recessed trems feel like a sports car to me, non-recessed feel like a hot rod. Both are very cool.

......to close to the body? hardtails are the highest of any bridge set-up.

and as i had the shannon before the Rhoads its kinda hard to adjust to the lower sitting floyd on the RR. how is the height of the bridges on non floyd bridges(tuneomatic, string through etc.) compared to floyds(both non-recessed and recessed)
non recessed floyds are closer to the tune-o-matic setup, recessed are close to fender bridges.

A true hardtail (originated from Fender) are on the body just like any other Fender bridge, be it a V-trem or two-point fulcrum. Here's my Fender hardtail.

A TOM bridge like on a Les Paul sits higher up. It's a fixed bridge, yes, but not a "hardtail".

              Recesses Trems vs. Non-Recessed

New to the forum and just wanted to throw in some of my ideas on the recessed vs. non-recessed. I have built numerous guitars (well over 50). One of the main advantages of a recessed trem cavity is its ease of build with neck thru design. If you look at your neck thru with a recessed trem, you will notice there is no neck angle. Also the fretboard bottom is level with the top of the body. It makes it easier to glue the "wings" to the neck. If you were to do a neck thru without a recess, the neck has to be glued to an angle in reference to the "wings". The wings and neck thru then need to be plane flat to each other. On a bolt on neck, especially in the early 80's when Starts were being modified to accept Floyd units, a shim is usually required to angle the neck. The angle is usually 1-2 degrees and really only takes about a 0.03" shim to angle the neck to allow a floating trem. Some people prefer to have the Floyd rest on the body to essentially "Block" the trem from pulling up on the bar. Just my two cents. I have no preference either way.

I much prefer the feel and look of a non-recessed floyd. I alos love tunamatic bridges, so they both feel at home to me I can play recessed, but would rather not

Non-recessed all the way here. I wish more guitar makers other than Caparison would build 'em like that.

Non-recessed for me to. Maybe that is why I like the 80s jap charvels.
                      Just one more guitar!

The perfect bridge is a top mounted Original Floyd Rose non-recessed, but routed out in back for pullups. The best of both worlds, and the way they should all be made. My custom shop will have this.

Recessed for me, although I have other guitars with non-recessed floyd. When I bought my Soloist I had a choice between 2, one recessed, one not, I choose the recessed one and I let the other one go, although it was signed by Mike Shannon. Was that a mistake ?

I'm happy enough with either, but I much prefer non-recessed, both in terms of feel and appearance....
