I agree with everyone not to worry about the neck- many players struggle to "gunk up" the neck and get that played-in look on a maple fretboard. But if you must clean it, 0000 steel wool should do it, but you will have to touch up the oil finish afterwards. Looks like others have provided you with some good technical advice regarding this task.

I have a nicely worrn in maple similar to that...pic/flash does not really show it but it's mojoed alright...The back is smooth as silk!

Sweet, how did you take such a killer BIG pic. Yeah I agree, the back of my guitars neck is silky smooth too, pretty unreal. I can't wait to play it live.
