I also own both instruments. The pre-Fender Soloist has a little thinner and flatter neck profile. Otherwise the quality is identical. I had heard that when Fender moved Jackson, they upgraded all of their tools and machines in hopes of making more consistent instruments. This might also explain the ridiculous price hikes. I remember when you could order a soloist for around $1,300. Now I can't afford to get another won. I could rant on and on why I hate Fender.

The old timers will remember this thing I made back around the buyout, in 2002:
But seriously, I only have one Fender-era Corona USA Jackson, all the rest are Ontario. Only thing I think is somewhat different is that the paint job seems to be a lot thicker on the Corona. It's an Eerie Dess, though, which is a multi-color swirl over a base of black. So the extra layers of paint might be attributable to the graphic, rather than some change in techniques across all finishes.please don't put it into words, 'cause I fear what you're thinking

All i can say is... i own a 91' Dinky USA... great guitar..(except for the
bland PUPS) Brother in law purchased a 2006' Soloist...(killer! Wonderful
quality, and tone!) And i bought a brand new Jackson 07' PC-1..and
it's a wonderful, perfectly made high quality axe. Fit and finish are great!
All 3 imo are equal...heck the new ones are probably a touch better imo!

The "pre-Fender" hype is basically a way to justify asking more for guitars made before the Fender takeover.
But put it into perspective; Akai owned Jackson before Fender did. At least Fender has made guitars for 50 years; Akai was making Reel-to-Reel recorders when Fender was in its heydey.
Before that, IMC owned Jackson - the same company that also owned Hondo. "Dude, I own a Hondo-era Soloist! It's the SHIT!"
Point is, Jackson made great guitars through all of those eras, no matter who owned the company. They still do.Ron is the MAN!!!!

Considering that Jackson's USA quality had already taken a serious hit in the last several AMIC years, there wasn't much more Fender could do to hose things up. Therefore, they trippled the price of customs and doubled the price of USA Selects. If you own a Fender-era Jackson, it just shows you paid too much.

Well its more logical to say that if you owned a pre fender, you paid too little.
They were underpriced by all business standards, so they could not keep up with demand (2 year waiting lists), a price increase is invetible when you have excess demand.
