I've found the X2N to have tons of output but a very undynamic response...forget about hearing any subtleties. From what you've described, I would give the Dimarzio Tone Zone a try.

I had an sl2ht that sounded thin, I put in a TZ and it helped. I think it may be all the paint used on them, it might be choking the resonation of the wood.

Yes, I've heard that and that is why I have 6 nitro finished Gibsons. But it doesn't seem to be the case with my SL2H.

I have an X2N in my KV2 and I find it doesn't have the organic woody sound I'm looking for.

...or possibly a Custom Custom, if it's too bright.

See, the Super3 shouldn't be that bright though, but for some reason I get an ice-pick like feel from it.

I may just have a lot of tweaking to do with it. I got much better results last night after a setup and adjusting the height.

I think I just have to keep tweaking until I find the sweet spot with this guitar.

I'd put in an Evolution.. never liked the SDs.

Anyway, hope you can 'get it right' eventually.

Have you ever considered the possibility that you might find a bolt on guitar a little more organic sounding? Just sayin'

I have had neck throughs and they just don't have the organic sound that bolt ons seem to have. Thats just one guys opinion of course.

Of all the pups mentioned the best I have found that sounded good in my SL2 were the Duncan Custom TB-5 and the Bill Lawrence 500XL blade pup.

An Evolution, although a great pickup, is hardly a cure for the issue that he is having. That's like recommending taffy to someone with a toothache.
