  • String Type & Gauge with PC1

    Hi all,

I have two questions regarding string type and gauge with the PC1.

    1) Does anyone know if using coated strings affects the strength/usability of the sustainer on the PC1? I know the coating is molecule thin, but it's a barrier between the metal of the strings and the magnet of the sustainer. Just curious.

    2) Does string size make a noticeable difference? Would 9's suffer from less sustain because it's a decrease in the amount of metal that's reacting to the sustainer?

    Thanks for your feedback,
    Eric

I've used 9-42 and 10-46 on my PC1 and really, I can't tell the difference in the sustainer performance from one set to the other.
The sustainer in the PC1 is pretty damn powerful.

As far as coated strings go, I've never used them so I don't really have any opinion on them.

I just stepped up to 12-52 (dropped half a step mind you) on all of my PC1's and it has not affected the sustainer at all. Better tone mind you but that is a totally different thread......

Phil was playing with 11-50's for the longest time and switched a few years ago to 12-52's, still dropped half a step mind you.

Thanks for all the responses guys, I appreciate it. Sounds like we have a sort of consensus....string gauge affects tone, of course, but not the strength of the sustainer. Makes sense, especially if PC is using 12s and Jackson is shipping the guitars with 10s.

                  Thanks again,
                  Eric
