  • ...the need of single coils

I'm looking for a new guitar and came across a SL1 and though: Well, I don't have any guitars with single coils anymore, but I see the pickups are called humbuckers (stacked). Any SL1 owners that can comment on how the sound is? Will I be able to get that glassy strat sound out of it, or will I need to change pickups for that? I'd love it if you include a pic too. Guitarporn always welcome.

    Btw...

..This is the guitar I'm considering:

    It's a colour I don't like, but I know I like the neck so...
    And I want another Jackson.

You can get pretty convincing strat sounds out of the sl-1, and because they are higher output, they match the bridge a little better than real single coils. I've had my stock sl1 for about 8 years and I still love it!

Well, I have an SL2H now,,,but on my old DK-1 from 1997 that I used to own, those single coils you mentioned do have a nice stratty tone....but a pretty low output. Here's an idea,,,,,put a Duncan hot rails in the neck, then you'll have a true, hot humbucker in the neck, one in the bridge, and then the single coil option in the middle. I'm really hoping to get an SL1 soon to add to my collection, and that's what I plan on doing. My SL2H is black, and I really want another Jackson soloist in gunmetal gray! WIth the way these guitars feel, I can justify having two! Anyway, I LOVE that hot rails pickup in the neck ( I have one installed there on my american strat and ESP m-ii) It really sings.

Sounds promising. I miss the USA Jackson feel. I have my CS, but I don't want to take it to a gig. With the financial crisis it's become far more expensive both to buy in Norway and to import.

A high-output stacked single like the Hot Rails isn't going to get glassy Strat tones.

You'll probably be better off getting a bridge humbucker that has an output level closer to the singles, rather than having a raging bridge hum and low-output singles, or trying to get Strat tones out of a stacked humbucker.

However, I'm not sure what pickups come in the SL1 these days, but I'm sure Jackson picked a set that were well-balanced in terms of volume.

              It's 2001 model, if that's any help.

The standard SL1 SC pickups are Seymour Duncan Classic Stackeds (with a JB humbucker in the bride). The SCs are very well suited to classic strat-like tones, and output is well balanced with the JB. It's a classic Jackson HSS set-up.

I had a SL1 and I hated the stock single coil pups. They were weak and had no character. I swapped them for a lil'59 in the neck and a duckbucker in the middle and that was much better. I rarely used the duckbucker alone, but combined with the TB4 in the bridge, it gave a nice strat twang. The lil'59 sounded nice and warm and matches the TB4 well in terms of output power.
