  • Info about my Jackson

    Hello all,

I posted these questions before, but I didn't have any pic's of the guitar, which made it hard for you all to help. Well I now have some pic's. I am not really a gear head, and this is the only guitar of decent quality I have ever owned. I am mainly trying to find out how much it might be worth, and exactly what model it is. It was bought 15 years ago, but according to the name plate, the serial number dates it to 87, 88, or 89. The number also indicates it is a USA Custom. The guitar is still in good condition, considering it has been played out with, recorded, and over all heavily used. a couple of nick's in the head stock and minor fret wear. Everything is original except tuning keys. I switched them out for sperzels. I love the guitar, but am in need of some cash, so I am thinking of selling. I am not looking to make a mint, but don't want to get cheated either. Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Cheers
    Will

Well, it's a custom shop so there's really no "model" per se. Neck-through it's a Soloist.

22 frets and a kahler trem make it pretty unique I think.

It looks nice. I really have no idea on the value, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it selling for $2000+.

It's not a Soloist - bolt on neck and all. I would think it would sell for $1200 to $1500 myself. Not sure though. It does have the Kahler, and not the later Jackson trem, so it must be an earlier guitar - closer to '86, judging by the 3 individual pickup selectors.

But I'm far from an expert - I only know Soloists. Someone else should chime in.

Well, the finish is a bit unusual, but other than that I don´t see anything that would make it go for top dollar. 22 frets and a Kahler isn´t really that unusual for the bolt-ons of that era... I´m guessing it´s a 1987. I would guess around 1K, but on Ebay you never know.

          It's an Ontario era strat.
The crackle finish is cool, but the Kahler kills it.
I'd say you would be lucky to get $700 or $800 for it.
Anything built before 1990 is considered a "Custom", but that doesn't mean it was custom ordered.

Thanks for the responses. It is nice to know what it is now. I had some people say it was a soloist, others a Dinky, but when I would look them up, they never looked exactly like mine. Now I did a search for a Jackson Strat, and sure enough, there it is.

So if I am going to sell it, is it better to sell it as is? Should I try to get a refret first? Like i said, there is some fret wear, but through an amp it still sounds great, and the neck plays as good as ever.

Also, why does the Kahler "kill it". I am just curious because I have always enjoyed it. I had a Charvel with a floyd rose, and that thing kept popping up on me, and I had all sorts of issues with it. Now I guarantee that it was because of something I did, but with the Kahler I never had any problems.

Thanks again guys for the help.

Floyds are just more popular. I've seen great looking guitars go for cheap because they had a Kahler on it.
I personally don't care for them as they just don't feel comfortable to me.
              But that's just my opinion.
I do like their stability, but I just can't get used to them.

As for the Charvel you mentioned, I'm curious what you mean by "popping up".
A cheap Floyd (knock-off) or a poorly setup Floyd can be a headache.

I have always wanted a blue crackle but I don't think I would pay 1200-1500 for one. Maybe $700-800. Then again I guess I wouldn't sell my pink crackle Onterio/SD plated for 700-800 either. It is my favorite.
                Just one more guitar!

The back end would keep popping up, like the spring tension changed. I was constantly changing string gauges, and at the time, I didn't realize that would set off the tremolo. Like I said, I know that was my fault. But it made my love the kahler.

You add 200 to that and it is a deal

I don´t think you´ll recoup your money from doing a refret. I´d try to sell as is.
