  • Jackson factory setup

I'm curious to know if USA Jacksons are set up at the factory prior to shipping out to retailers. Not all online retailers provide this service, obviously.

    Thanks!

Sure, but by the time it gets to a shop across the country, it may be out of whack from temperature variations.

Not to mention bouncing around in the back of a UPS truck all day today until it gets delivered to me... My building's like the last stop - 6 or 6:30 before I get UPS.

        Oh, the misery.

The truss rod might need adjusted depending on the difference in climate. The factory setup as far as fret dress, action and tremolo adjustment/intonation is very good.

Especially today, right? (It is today, right?)

I'm the same way at home. When I got my SL1 a few weeks back I took a 1/2 day because I didn't want it sitting on the porch in the 95-degree weather. Guy didn't come until about 10 after 6, it was the weirdest combination of boredome and anxiety I have ever experienced.

I'm curious to know if any manufacturer doesn't set theirs up before they leave the factory.

Perhaps I should have said "set up WELL".

My RR1T showed up set up reasonably well. However since then i've discovered it is very temperature sensitive and 5 degree C temperature changes require some truss rod adjustment.

Mine went from SoCal to Matt's and back. It needed minor trem spring tightening. There was a bit of buzz on the low E that was fixed with new strings.

I'm willing to bet that some companies adjust the guitar "within specs" and ship them out. So the setup they perform is generic and not specific to the instrument. I would hope that other companies spend more time on it.

You know what's interesting - both my ProMod and my Adrian Smith have blanks on the hang tag under Fret Dress. My Dave Murray did not. Both Maiden guitars have excellent frework, but the ProMod's frets were not real shiney.

I must have the latest UPS guy on the planet - he doesn't come until 7:00 now. We're probably around the last stop - drops off at my apartment, then shoots through the Midtown tunnel back to the depot in Queens.

Edit: Oh and the setup on my Adrian Smith was spot on, even though the guitar was hot to the touch when I took it out - as in - stuck in the back of a truck for 10 hours, bouncing around NYC.

Edit Edit: But that's all irrelavent since I'm probably going to switch to 10's and have to set the whole thing up again. Man, that puts a damper on the whole new guitar thing...

Maybe in the 70s or 80s. Hondo, Harmony, etc. the really cheap stuff with action a mile high off the frets.

Fender and Gibson both are notorious for very "generic" setups.
The strings are on it and intonation is somewhat close but a far cry from what I call a good set up.
I know a lot of things change due to the abuse in shipping but some of this stuff is obviously not done at the factory.
They go by their spec sheet and if its close it goes out the door. That extra few minutes spent on setup cuts into the bottom line.
I can't bitch though... it brings me a lot of business.

The real crime is the store that just pulls the guitar out of the box and puts it up on the wall. I played a beautiful 335 - tobacco burst. Played like shit - the action was high and the neck pickup was all angled and wonky - clearly a "Friday" guitar.

That said, the setup on my Dave Murray was spot on - maybe the best I've ever had. Now was it Fender or The Music Zoo? Don't know...
