It's been about 4 years since I've been able to head to the NAMM show and I know back then they were cracking down on the passes, but is it still possible to get passes these days or is it a lost cause?

Well you have to know someone who can get you a pass in your name. They check your ID at the door to make sure that the name matches your badge. No more "borrowing" someone else's badge.
