anyone here use the schaller sure claw?

I picked up a few of these to install in a few guitars so I don't need to bring a screwdriver to gigs.

however the mounting screws are freaking LONG!

long enough where if you install it i'd worry about screws entering the pickup cavity and messing up wiring or touching pickups. especially on guitars with a middle pickup

anyone install one of these and run into anyproblems?
I'm a little hesitant to install this on my PC1 or my SL1 for fear of damaging pickups.

here's a pic. Yeah i know i could use shorter screws but I'd worry about them tearing out under stress.

You can always use shorter mounting screws having the same diameter I suppose :think:.

This thing looks like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist, plus it looks like it could actually do more harm than good because of how the screws mount.

You can always unscrew the pickups and get them out of the way while you install it, and if you run into a clearance issue, it's not going to hold any better with 1/4" of screw poking into a pickup cavity than it is with a 1/4" shorter screw.

Now that I've been as helpful as I can...

I, too, think this is a stupid product. I also don't understand why you'd need a screwdriver at gigs relevant to tremolo spring claw adjustment. Usually it's best to do your guitar setup at home, rather than in front of an audience. :dunno:

ugh i dont know why i'm even replying to this but i dont do guitar setup at gigs. i bring a screwdriver only in the event that i do need to make some sort of minor adjustment. you know, along with extra strings, etc to make sure i'm covered in emergency.

with weather being unpredictable here, especially with indoor temp swings, i sometimes need to tweak it a little before show.

Well, great, now that I told you how to install it without messing up your pickups, you can tweak it all you want before a show.

The spring claw is pretty much a set it and forget it thing for me, unless I change string brands, but in the same scenario I'd probably just leave the rear cover off and bring a screwdriver, if you really want to be covered in an emergency, there are a lot of other screws on a guitar, it couldn't hurt to have one handy.

I know this thread is kinda cold, but nevertheless. I had my luthier install Sure Claw on my Peavey V-Type EXP (aka the Vandenberg Re-Issue), after I had some EMGs and a black Original Floyd Rose "Pro" (the low profile edition of the Daddy) added, and must say - I like it! Adjusting the spring tension is a breeze as is putting fresh springs on. The claw itself is far sturdier than any of the run-of-the-mill claws out there, even the ones that Floyd Rose supply with the Floyd Rose kits - in part because it is made out of a big metal block, rather than sheet steel. Schaller make great and pretty hardware, must hand it to them - aside from butt-ugly locking tuners, they keep impressing me every time.
As to the installation itself - let a qualified luthier do it, especially if you're talking PC1 or Soloist! Whatever it is, you won't regret having it on there!

-Personally looking at how force is applied to the spring claw, I would not hold as much trust in Schaller's mounting as I have in the basic FR screws
Especially through a thin plate of wood under the p'ups instead of 2 long suckers running into a solid part of the body

My advice is to NOT install that one say..... a Koa PC1! LOL!

And besides they are all correct when they state that Leo did it best!
