Yes, by unmodified i meant without any devices that block it, tremol-nos and stuff like that.

Is "flush mounted" the same as "non-recessed" then? I haven't played one of those (bet it will feel weird).

No - flush mounted means the baseplate of the Floyd is flush (against) the top of the guitar. Non recessed can mean flush mounted (though, it is typically not used to mean flush mounted) or floating above the body of the guitar with or without a pull-up route behind it. Think of it this way. The first Floyds were installed either flush mounted or non-recessed floating. Then someone "invented" the pull-up route. Then someone decided to recess the Floyd within the recess to get the strings closer to the body.

Typically, Fender Strats with Floyds are flush mounted - see Floyd Rose Classic series - as it does not require a change to the neck pocket. ProMod Charvels are non-recessed floating as they have a angled neck pocket to that the bridge height it higher - allowing the floyd to float. A shim can accomplish the same thing as an angled neck pocket - see 80's Kramers - these had little float to the Floyd unless you shimmed the neck.

All methods are valid, it just depends on what you like, or what you've grown-up with.
