Converting a Morton MM1 to a 12-string

Not interested in whether or not anyone thinks it's a good idea, I'm only looking for ideas on where to get the hardware to do it.

So far I've found a Schaller 12-string TOM that is reputed to replace a 6-string without mods, so all I need is a stopbar with 12 holes and 6 tuners and that headstock clamp Jackson uses on 12-string Soloists.

Any ideas?

Personally, I think it's kind of a cool idea if done well. I'd think about looking for a piezo bridge if you can find one.

Beyond that, the main thing I suggest is to do a little research to ensure that you can get 12 strings without a 1 3/4 nut width. Not saying that 1 3/4 is the standard 12 string width, but I'd hate to go through the process to find that out later.

There is a Jackson Rhoads custom shop on egay that claims to have a 1 11/16 nut on the end. They even go to say that its made out of brass.

I think it's cool as hell. Any idea on where to place the other 6 tuners? I always thought about converting a bolt-on charvel model series neck to a 12-stg, but haven't (yet) done anything. I don't even know if those necks can support a 12 stg's tension. I'm assuming it about twice as much tension on the neck as a 6, right?

Sully - Oddly, I already have the piezo 6-string bridge - the LR Baggs from StewMac. Sounds nice through the GFS CMP-1 compressor, not so nice without it

Allparts has an ABM 12-string TOM. Someone at the SD forum mentioned the Schaller bridge, but I couldn't find it on their site. Probably have to cut the slots on a 6-string TOM to get it, which would allow me to customize the string spacing, I guess. Hmmmm.


As for the other 6 tuners, I'm thinking some sort of modded tailpiece with high ratio tuners (ala LSR) or a Speedloader setup with balls on both ends.

So my next problem to be solved is a clamp I can mount to the headstock for the 7-12.

Seriously, cool idea Matty...hopefully everything works out for you. The Dominion is the perfect body to do something like this. If everything falls into place, it should sound amazing.

Maybe you could mount the extra six tuners behind the original bridge and stop tailpiece - I don't know the set-up on the Morton but I thought it had the stop tail.

Anyway... with the design of these tuners from stewmac (http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/G...ss_Tuners.html), it would be an easy modification to mount these "Banjo" type tuners - straight holes (of various diameters through the body). Then maybe mount a Floyd Locking nut behind the nut that is on there right now to lock the additional six strings.

Sounds Do-Able. Adding duct tape (call it Alabama chrome if you want to add some class) somewhere into the design will surely up the success rate.

Yeah some sort of trapeze-shaped tailpiece on the stopbar posts with banjo tuners would look nice.
Art-Deco-type staggered shape, like a D'Angelico or something.

Maybe something like this modded for tuning.

Those steinberger gearless tuners would be pretty slick. You'd have to route out some wood out of the back though since the widest headstock it'd take is 16.89 mm (according to the spec sheet). Same ratio tuning as LSRs, 40:1!
