Sounds like the problem may be light corrosion in the input jack barrel. They can get tarnished and you'll get an intermittent ground contact. It usually doesn't act like a bad jack that has frayed wiring or what-not. When I find this issue I use the electronic cleaner on a paper towel wrapped around a 1/4 jack, then I just just start jamming it in and out of the jack until it cleans up the barrel.
I've had this issue recently on a Japan Jackson and a USA G&L. It doesn't seem to be a quality issue, maybe beer got in there. Maybe the cord came out and dropped in some stage beer and then was plugged in wet, lol.
It's either that, or gremlins.
