  • Where to get narrow post 500K pots?

    This is so aggravating.

I've tried to change volume pots on three different guitars, only to find that All Parts only carries wide post pots and every one of these guitars uses narrow pots.

What instruments even use the wide post pots?

You could try Mouser or Newark too...everything under the sun.

Go to stewmac.com for these pots. There are two first-tier manufacturers, each with their own post sizes: CTS are 1/4" (~6.35mm) fine knurl (24 tooth) or are smooth-shaft. Alpha are 6mm coarse knurl (18 tooth). American Fenders, Gibsons, will use CTS, and just about everything else will be Alpha (or an even cheaper Alpha copy in cheap guitars). You can get Alpha pots in normal size or mini size, it won't make a difference in your tone, but full size might last longer. Guitar pots are a little bit different in dimension than the pots you'll find in an electronics store, and you'll also have a hard time finding audio taper at the right values, so don't even bother getting something less than the best.

Ream out the holes for the bigger shafts very simple to do.

+1. The size difference is small enough that after reaming you can use both size pots with no problem.
