I generally prefer the stop tail because you can tweak it more and I like the way I can rest my hand for palm muting.
By tweaking, I mean you can have it down on the body or up high. You can top wrap. It can be made of zinc or aluminum giving different tones. The stud can be made or brass or steel changing the tone as well.
But string through isn't all that bad either. It can look cleaner. My 750XL is string through and plays great. I have a Kramer neck through with a fixed "Fender like" string through bridge and it plays well too.
