Either way, the KVXT with a pup swap alone will probably make you quite happy. A good q might also be how the hell is a 17 year old getting this kind of money. You were considering a $5000+ custom guitar and a $3000 half stack. Almost $10k on gear at 17? I'm 21 and I've got maybe $2000 in all mine. That's all the stuff in my sig. EVH did VH1 with a $150 guitar don't forget that lol

That's coz my parents are giving me the money (NO, WE ARE NOT RICH), if I get admission into a good college. I already have an FD worth $4000, then if I get into the best Medical college in India (which is gonna be very tough, but I am working on it, studying around 8 hours a day), then the money I get might get upto $10,000. If not that, anything between 4000 - 10000. So, right now, studying in the day, havin fun in the later evening and night.
And EVH had that awesome marshall to record VH1.
I just wish I get into the college, get the money, and start shredding and playing seriously.
And, my parents might give me $2000 right now to buy the KV1 and I wont wait until June.
If I get it, should I just swap the PUP, or just have it stock ????

...you're gonna be in med school and have time for "shredding"? Are your parents also gonna fund your budding cocaine/amphetamine addiction? ;p
Would your parents be interested in adopting a 28 year old Jesus look-alike?
Play it stock for awhile, figure out what you don't like about it (if anything), then go shopping. I'd recommend a place with a nice return policy, so you can return/exchange if you don't like them.Last edited by neptoess; 04-11-2012, 10:57 AM.

Another thing, college is infinitely harder than high school. I did all honors and graduated valedictorian of my high school without ever studying. In college, even studying, staying at a 3.0 GPA is hard. High school is just to test that you aren't mentally challenged. College really shows your skills. Like I said though, good luck getting good at guitar as a full-time student. You'd be better off working full-time

And $8000 for gear? Definitely loaded compared to me. My parents spent about $1000 total on my gear in my 7 years of playing. And I don't have some of that gear today. Just get through school with decent gear, like anything. You cant play loud in college. Save your parents some cash, as the value of a dollar must be pretty irrelevant to you. If you find $8000 in gear necessary once you graduate buy it yourself. And EVHs 'awesome' marshall was a stock 68, which werent exactly that expensive in the 70s. He still likely worked his ass off for the less than 2000 in gear he had by VH1.

I think yash is just making the mistake of thinking he needs good gear. Anyone who's good at playing will be just as good on a $500 guitar as they are on a $50000 one. Nowadays with the used market, you can easily get enough gear for a full blown tour for $1000. The best part is he wants a replica of Dave's early stuff, but he wants it to be versatile and plug it into a Mesa or a JVM. Dave's early shit was JCM 800 and later CAE 3+ with VHT poweramp

I agree. A teenager with an idol and unquestioning financial backing is a very dangerous thing. ;p
I beg ya yash, get a reasonable setup. Play it, love it and focus on school if you're indeed working so hard to get in (it will kick your ass, guaranteed). Learn what you like in a guitar, not with a $5000 price tag, then move forward.
I mean, I may have missed it, but how long have you even been playing? What kinds of guitars have you played? Why this one, aside from the Mustaine influence?
Edit: Okay, you've said for a year and not very seriously. What kinds of guitars though?

Haha, after a year of playing I dropped $110 I made at my first job on a set of black/white zebra L-500s with chrome housings. I thought I had THE tone and THE guitar. I sold them when I bought the Ibanez though. The guy I sold them to beat the guitar to shit and actually cracked the housings and broke the windings. Bill doesn't make that color scheme anymore either :/. Really though, get a decent guitar. Learn to set it up. Get a decent amp. Learn how to get good tone, not just with the gear, but with your hands/technique. I used to play with so much gain to get a nice crunch until I learned to beat the hell out of the strings and really dig in to get that aggressive sound. This also taught me that 10-46 sets break really easy with aggressive playing

I wouldn't wish Line6 upon my worst enemy. Get a real tube amp. Valveking combos are cheap. As are old blue voodoos (rust in peace era tone right there). I got my AOR mint for 250 bucks. Just gotta shop around. I hate modelling with a passion though. The only good modeller is the Axe Fx, which costs a fortune
edit: also BIAS your amp. I had a VK combo and hated it. I wish to this day that I would have bias modded it to get the power tubes running warmerLast edited by neptoess; 04-11-2012, 01:10 PM.

This poor guys head is going to hurt from all these "suggestions" falling from such a high elevation.
OP- Get what you want, change it how you feel, if you don't like it, change it again, or get something else. Learn what you like. Thats how everyone finds "their" gear. No one can tell you whats going to be right for you. Just try everything you can. Good luckLast edited by veemagic; 04-11-2012, 01:16 PM."I have so much gayness at times.
