Stage one of floyd nut conversion complete. Need help with stage 2

I'm finally getting around to getting a floyd nut on my model 6. I have a birch shelf cut and glued on. My questions are these:

1) Should I sand it so that it is level with the fretboard (I assume yes)

2) How do I know the proper height for the nut? Is there a trick to getting it right?

I just used popsicle sticks to do the shelf since they are solid birch. Its obviously a bit rough right now, but I'll fix that

Thats not going to work I hope you haven't glued that down. You need to make more of a wedge platform so the OFR nut sits flat. Have you taken the OFR nut and placed it on the shelf with out what you have on there now?
Maybe this will give you an idea.

Best not to glue anything down because you will have to test fit a lot to get it right.
If you have glued it down then get out the file and go to work.

I have glued it. The plan always was to glue the shelf on then shape it.

Easier to shape it before you glue it down,Less chance of marring the surrounding finish.
Best to use one piece of wood as well.

Looks like you will need to add a little more to the angled part closest to the headstock. Careful filing that so you don't mar the rest, maybe use a little masking tape on there to protect it.

I am finding out there is wisdom in shaping first, gluing second. Haha
