Ik know the Seymour Duncan CC "Custom Custom" is the same as a Custom or Custom 5 in winding but a different magnet
they appear a little lower in output (or perhaps just a little less is the grinding frequencies) then the latter p'ups of the family
but they certainly are in the distortion levels of output, not moderate/vintage"There's nothing taking away from the pure masculinity I possess"
-"You like Anime"
"....crap!"

The Custom Custom has an Alnico 2 Magnet in in. The Custom has a Ceramic, the Custom 5 has an Alnico 5. Today's favorite is the Custom 8 wit an Alnico 8. They all use the same basic "Custom" pickup coils with different magnets that are easy to swap.
The J at the end of the CCJ indicates they were wound by MJ at Seymour Duncan, a lady who many sellers like to use to inflate the prices of the pickup "These are special wound by MJ".
It may not be normal to have a high output pickup in the neck, but it is normal to use WHAT SOUNDS BEST. That's all that matters. Who give a crap about what is "right". If it sounds good it is good. If it doesn't, change it. And what sounds good to you may not sound good to me. And my guitar rig may sound better with pickups that don't work good in yours.
Use your ears.
Post pictures of the backs of these pickups to let me see how old they are. I really don't think CC's even existed in back 1985 when your axe was made. But SD changed the labels on the back thru the years, and we may be able to give you a time frame as to the age of these pickups.

"MJ" Stands for Maricela Juarez. She works for Seymour Duncan in his custom shop winding pick ups and doing "custom winds." I have a few pick ups she custom wound and to be honest they're not anything special. The only difference between a JB and a JB she wound is a hefty price increase. If the pick ups is marked "CCJ" it is a "Custom Custom" wound by MJ. Just like DonP said.Last edited by leftykingv2; 12-15-2013, 07:09 PM.This is what I think of Gibson since 1993. I HATE BEING LEFT HANDED! I rock out to Baby metal because Wilkinsi said I can't listen to Rick Astley anymore.

CC means it's a Custom Custom; that's its model name. The model number is SH-11. http://www.seymourduncan.com/product...dex.php?page=3

I learned about the phenomenon after I had a couple of customs that ended in J. Those particular pickups were put into multiple guitars that had non-J Customs in them, and I did notice a little extra sweetness in them after the swap. Slightly more sustain that would eventually have a slight harmonic overtone in certain notes, just overall a little livelier.
Pickups definitely aren't rocket science and are very much like stew; everyone uses the same ingredients, but some stew tastes better. MJ's got some tasty stew. Giggity.
