Designed to be used exclusively with the Jackson active mid boost? Or can they be used as stand alone pickups in other guitars and NOT sound like ass?

Never say never with Jackson, but I have never and I mean never seen a J200 without the Jackson electronics system on a stock J/C. If someone else has, never mind. I tried wiring up a J200 passive that way once, and never again._________________________________________________

The J50BC can be used without a boost (sounds like EVH) but I've not seen the J200s. J100s I see without a boost.
The J200 singles are high impedance around 12K I think. One would guess that would mean muddy. The boost circuit presents a high impedance load to the pickups (i.e. not loading them down) and presents a low impedance output to drive thru the guitar cord to the amp.
