Pick up help...

Got my hands on a RR1, its all stock with a JB and a 59. With standard tuning it sounds great but I tune to C standard and it gets muddy sounding. Is it normal for a JB to get muddy with lower tuning? I've double checked my setup for string height and ect...and I don't play with tons of gain but I use a tube screamer. If so any pick up recommendations. Passive please, no more EMG's...haha. Thanks in advance fellas.

Why not tune to C, is the guitar not capable of lower tunings? Thanks for the advice on pick up selection.

Duncan SHPR-2. I use one in the Death Kitty, and I used to have it tuned down to C standard. The uneven coils really give it a balanced tone and it's medium-hot. Plus tons of splitty options if you want extra tonal versatility.

Duncan PATB-1 or 2. Might want to look at reducing the bass on your amp as well.

JBs suck. The Invader is my weapon of choice because of the massive low end but it can muddy up if you're not careful. Also try a Duncan Distortion.

If you ask me it's also normal in standard tuning

FWIW, perhaps the JB just isn't the pickup for 'modern' high gain

Perhaps I didn't play it in standard tuning long enough to notice. I re strung it and set it up almost immediately after I got it. I backed the bass down on the amp to compensate but sounds way to thin...Gonna try a pick up swap when I get a little more time. Thanks guys

For downtuned stuff, the Duncan Alternative-8 is killer. It's the Custom with an Alnico-8 magnet (between an A5 and a ceramic), and does a fantastic job of keeping downtuned stuff sounding nice and clear.

Anyway, I took out the JB in my old RR1T and used a PATB-2 for D and Drop C tuning... it worked great.

I had a guitar with a pair of invaders in it. In my opinion they're just way too hot. I remember being able to hit the 12th fret E string and the note would just ring out forever. Way too much output to be useful for my taste but they do have awesome low end and a nice tone for a pick up that hot.

The JB sucks. The JB especially sucks downtuning. I like EMGs and the Super Distortion for downtuning.

I haven't really tried any of the boutique pickups.
