Model 6 - making room for the switch

I just picked up a Model 6 (with Kahler) that someone had modded from 3 on/off switches, to 1 kill switch and a 5-way blade.
Yes, there is a slight ground issue, which I haven't even looked at yet. And, really, when I say slight, it is very minor. I didn't even notice it at first.


But, my immediate concern is the 5-way.
When they cut out the straight line, it seems like they didn't cut it wide enough. It is a tight fit, and therefore is harder to flip (accurately) then I would want it to be in a 'live' situation.


So, the question becomes -
How do I route it wider and not damage the finish. Whoever did it originally, I must give 'em props for how professional it looks, I'd like to keep it that way.

Hey pianoguyy,

You could get a thin piece of metal, stick some double sided tape to one side. Then stick some sandpaper to the other side of the tape and use that to widen the slot. 220 or 180 would work fine and not do any damage to the finish - assuming you are sanding at a 90 degree angle to the top.

So, sandpaper is good.
That is kind of what I was thinking. But I wanted to check other ideas first.

Hell, I was thinking I could even just stick a screw driver in the space. When it couldn't go any further, force it a little more - to compress the wood just enough for the space to open.

Routing out the body is butchering. I'm guessing it wasn't as bad as it looked in the photographs? I was close to buying it and decided against last second because there was a local seller with a nicer Model 6. Weird coincidence.

Oh. I thought you meant it was a bad job or something. lol
Truth is, if I had a different playing style, I wouldn't even worry about how tight the blade moves. It could even be the switch itself. Not all of them are made for speed.

How else do you think you would put pickup selector in it?
3 minis, while not uncommon for us old Jackson players, has always been a complaint. A 5-way makes much more sense.
If you put a cap on the body (like in the picture below) you wouldn't even see the two mini switch routes.

I was thinking of maybe having it rewired. Using the 3rd mini as something else. I don't need a kill switch. Maybe a JE-1200 bypass? Flip it on with the knob set to where I want it, instead of turning the knob up and down every time.

I don't think for the price you can go wrong. But I was looking more for something that was kept original and if I had bought that, I'd have still been looking for another Model 6. hahahaha. It was just a weird coincidence that the same day someone local listed a white Model 6. The kill switch is usually added because people complain about the battery being drained. But I always unplug my guitars anyway. I am one of the odd guys that prefer the Kahlers to the Floyd types, so that's definitely going to be a shredding machine when you're done

I don't hate Kahler. But I would much rather have a real Floyd.
I love the JT6. But I avoid the JT590. In fact, I try to avoid most of the Jackson trems I have used, except the Jt6 and 580lp.

Hey, I would have bought them both. I am always buying something - which is why taking long road trips with no time line to meet is nice. I can shop in every town between point a and point b.
Although, the last few times, I make plans and then have people jerk me around.



And you are absolutely right. For the price ---
I am surprised no one bought it earlier. But when it was still there, I didn't give the 90 minute midnight drive in the rain a second thought.
