  • This is for real? How to file fret ends

Although I've assembled and repaired many guitars, I choose not to dig into the wood for fear of irreversible damage.

I was taking a look at the process for removing sharp fret ends and came across this procedure in a guitar magazine. Can anybody tell me if this is the preferred method to remove sharp fret ends? Seems a bit..... rough... to me!

I have a 3 sided file that I ground off the sharp side on a grinder. I did this after reading a Guitar Player article years ago how to make your own fret files. I believe Stew Mac sells a file with no sharp edges.
I wouldn't use a file with the edges. I 'd be too scared to cut into the fretboard.

Ok thanks. I taped off guitar necks before and used a flat file, but in the pics, this guy scratched the hell out of the neck
I was trying to find the "right" way if there is one. Ill look for that specific file, thanks for the suggestion.

Tape off fretboard... and grinding one side smooth on a 3 sided file is actually a good idea.

I recently smoothed the super sharp fretends on my monarkh
I looked at the various youtube vids..in the end I used something like this:

It was a total breeze. Literally 4 or 5 light strokes and the frets were sorted.
