  • Howard Cutting Board Oil

    I was given a bottle of this - http://howardproducts.com/cutting-board-oil/

Is it safe to use on my guitars?
Mainly the fretboards (ebony, rosewood, maple).
But also frets and necks and bodies.

If it is safe, would there be anything different that needs done?

I wouldn't put it on the fingerboard of a maple neck but try a little on the back of a raw neck of a cheaper guitar and see how it does.
    Really? well screw Mark Twain.

It's the same stuff as in Fast Fret - mineral oil. No worries use it on your strings and fretboards. It's not a hard finish so you wouldn't use it on your necks or bodies like true oil.

Absolutely safe. Won't harm finishes. Won't harm electronics. Won't harm wood.

I'm currently using Ikea branded food grade cutting board mineral oil on my ebony fretboards and bare necks.

LOL It really is good stuff. You can't tell the difference between that and lemon oil when you use it...

Except perhaps the lack of lemony scent in the Ikea oil?

                That and the color.

BTW, you could drink the cutting board mineral oil. It's non-toxic. It's also used to relieve constipation. LOL

                  Thank you.
I assumed it was safe. But I didn't know if there was a "strength" or additive difference that would make the application different - you know, like how food grade peroxide will melt your skin, but if you water it down to the same strength as what you buy at the drug store, it becomes safe to drink, but never drink the stuff at the drug store because of the additives in it. Sort of like that.

So I figured I better check.

OK, next question ---- because Gibson forgot to respond.

I have acquired a Faded Les Paul in a game of chance. The fastest ever built.

                    Baked Maple fingerboard
Mahogany neck - bare wood (stained)
Maple Body top - I honestly don't know if it is bare wood or not
Mahogany body - bare wood (stained)

How do I take care of that.

^ on the Gibson, there will be some lacquer finish on the wood. Naptha would keep it clean. Naptha cleans just about any lacquer finish.

Mineral oil, lemon oil, caranuba and/or beeswax, Howard's products, whatever...

But this is a "faded". They aren't the regular "trans" finish.

I've determined that the mineral oil can be used on the Baked Maple (fingerboard). I am just not sure if I am supposed to be lubing up the body and neck. Especially, since I can't tell if the Maple top is finished or not.

                            these are both "colored"

                            are they safe to use?
and, because they are colored, is it going to dye anything?
