  • Need help: replacing tuning buttons, can't get the screw in

I have a guitar with Schaller locking machine heads. Standard button.

I ordered some Schaller knurled barrell knobs...had to get them from Germany and they took a long time to arrive:

This website is for sale! schaller-electronic.com is your first and best source for all of the information you’re looking for. From general topics to more of what you would expect to find here, schaller-electronic.com has it all. We hope you find what you are searching for!

I removed the old buttons; they have a much shorter mounting screw. The new ones have a longer mounting screw.

The problem is that the screw is just barely long enough. And there's some play between the screw shaft and the inside of the barrel. So when I place the barrel knob on the mounting shaft, the mounting screw wiggles around a bit and it's near impossible to get it in the hole. I say near impossible because I was able to mount 3 of the knobs after a lot of trial and error.

Anyone know the mounting screw size for Schaller buttons? Can't find it in any schematic.

Any tips for this? I tried to place the old buttons back on and I have the same issue; it's super hard to get the screw into the hole.

I'm thinking if I can get a slightly longer screw it'll be easier to mount.

Problem solved. Had to loosen the string first. DOH!
