  • finish ??

    ive got a 85 soloist the clear coat is a mess. but the base coat isnt bad at all. anyway to buff or remove the entire clear coat & leave on the original base color coats & reclear it.

    would wetsanding the top layer help? i'd give it a whirl.

      Just what I was thinking. If the clear has some body to it, wet sand it with 800 until smooth, follow up with 1000, then buff. If you think the new finish is lacquer, I would use mineral spirits to wet sand with as it wont swell the wood in the holes and cause cracks and dry out leaving sunken areas around the holes. If it is poly, water and soap is fine.

        i've been "damp sanding" to avoid that! [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

          Be SUUUUper carefull not to buff through the clear...
          It is alot easier than one would think....
          GOOD LUCK. let us know how it worked out and any tips
          that you found out....

            Question? Won't the mineral spirits "melt" the lacquer?

            Also, I've learned from experience that when sanding any flat surface you should use a sanding block [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]
