In the amount of time it will take to do all that, you could spend 5 bucks on a new pot and install it. Chances are that if the pot is already noisy, it is just plain worn out and the problem will likely re-occur. replace it and save yourself the headache (not the one from the bad POT, but the one from the bad potentiometer...)
