For as close to an 81 as you can get for a passive, thats the pickup you want IMHO.

A few good choices listed that I can vouche for are the X2N and the Evolution.

I don't think the Full Shred or the Duncan Distortion sound close at all. That said I am only experienced with a Full Shred neck in a neck position, and I am sure the bridge model is brighter and more powerful which might bring it closer to an 81.

We just had an order for APC Persuader Lead Custom pickups and Joel Drabicki had one left as of recently.

They are supposed to be a really, really good alternative to an EMG 81, so you might want to check those 2 threads in the General Charvel/Jackson forum to see if one is still available. You get the 10% discount since it was a group order.

That being said, I would just like to mention that I actually have no idea what an EMG 81 sounds like. 89, yes, 81, no. I have just pointed out that a couple of the pickups that were mentioned are very good. Perhaps I shouldn't have even posted in this thread...

Travis it's cool you do have good taste in pickups. The Full Shred and DD are 2 of my favorites/ I have that setup in my GAX70 Ibanez and it smokes!

see IF i go with the 81 i will want the whole guitar to have actives in it,and have to buy all actives.
IF i stay with a passive model the other pups in my guitar( duncan JAZZ, duncan single coil) will stay put [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]
I am very temted to get the EMG's since it seems that all the real heavy tones i hear on disc are EMG 81's! [img]/images/graemlins/drool2.gif[/img]

the DuncanDistortion & X2N are great high output pickups but to me DO NOT sound like an EMG 81 at all. neither of them have the treble, presences or harmonics the 81 does. the BL 500XL does, tho i like the BL500L alot more since its not as trebly or harsh almost the difference between an 81/85.

its much fuller & warmer sounding better low end & sounds great for rock & NON metal stuff were the EMG81 is lacking. ive got an X2N in a 82 bich & 88 ST-3, they sound different. the early one has alot more snap or punchiness & low end. the newer one sounds almost like a duncan JB but with more output, which im guessing sounds alot like a duncan distortion.
