Re: Ebonizing rosewood - India ink pic

Oh, OK...those who are in favor of staining rosewood boards are allowed to state their opinion.

If you don't think it looks good or right for whatever reason, keep that thought to yourself. Gotcha. I guess I missed that section in the rules.

Some folks think that staining rosewood is great. Good for them.

Some people don't. Fine for them.

In your opinion, those who think that staining rosewood doesn't look good are "Negative".

I didn't pick the tune, I'm just dancing to your beat. If you think I'm being "sensitive"...well, I'm confused. I thought I was being "Negative".

This isn't a personal attack, Dave, just excersizing my equal opinion...freedom of speech and opinions flows in two directions.

agreed, 'bane. As for saying that you shouldn't stain rosewood is like saying you shouldn't stain any wood that looks nice. So much for our amber, crimson, or purple stained guitars then eh? It's a matter of taste, color and opinion and what someone doesn't like, another may love. That's what makes this little blue marble go 'round

There is a large difference between a stain on a guitar thats designed to be stained for figure such as figured maple or figured ash. But you don't see stained flamed koa. (At least not primary color stains, sometimes you see tinted natural stains on koa but not often). Rosewood's figure comes from its striping. Some rosewood doesn't have much figure and so that seems at least acceptable to me for staining. I weep for that Kramer though cause that board looked awesome pre stain. I wouldn't care to much if someone stained the rosewood board on my Dean or Jackson but if anyone went near my bc rich with a stain bottle I'd have to beat em down cause the rosewood on that one has some sick figuring.

I agree with Sully, respect the poor wood, what did he ever do to you?

There is no secret I don't like ebony, but I do like darker woods on fretboards. If your getting a custom guitar there is absolutely no excuse in my opinion to have to stain anything if you want a darker wood that isn't rosewood and doesn't feel like ebony there are tons of options (wenge and zircote to name a few). I understand that problem, thats why I ordered a zircote board for my custom.

I suspect though most of the people staining are doing so because it was an import model or something they didn't order new themselves. What makes me my head a bit is why, if its such a big thing, did you get that guitar in the first place? I'm not saying your an evil bad person if you stain a rosewood fretboard but this phenomenon is very much puzzling to me.

Do you know why people buy import guitars? That's right, they don't cost an arm and a leg. How many of the regular imports come with an ebony fretboard? That's right, one - four if you count the sig models. How many of those four come with a trem? That's right, none! My point is, when you're buying a guitar you're stuck with whatever options it has. Unless you have the $$$$ to order a custom. On the other hand: An import is cheap, and if you screw it up you haven't ruined a guitar worth thousands of dollars. That's why people are modifying their import guitars.

I already explained why I would be interested in staining rosewood; While I don't really care for ebony, I just like dark fretboards on some guitars. Period. That's the only reason I have, and the only reason I need.

What would you say if I told you that I was planning to paint the entire fretboard pink? Would you tell me to go buy a guitar that came that way from the factory?

I don't see why people are getting so worked up over this. If I happen to own a guitar with a funky looking slab of rosewood on it, and I want to change its looks, where's the harm in that? And whose elses business is it really?

I wasn't worked up about it, but it certainly seemed like you were

I still don't think that argument holds alot of weight, I mean believe me I understand the money issue, I saved 4 years for my custom. Four Years! Thats a long time.

If you want to stain the rosewood thats fine but I think its a pretty small cosmetic issue. It would be one thing if you didn't like the feel of rosewood. But then again people obsess over different details, I have my own quirks when it comes to guitar preferences.

So while I appreciate what your saying I still don't really "get it" because to me its just not that big of a thing. Thats ok though, I don't need to get it, I was just looking for the reasons behind your wanting to stain a guitar.

[/ QUOTE ] Wellllll...there are pink woods..but the prices are pretty incredible. Two I know of, Bois de Rose (which is purpleish red with pink and magenta streaking) and Pink Ivory which is very very very very expensive and rare. So uh yea. Just to add insult to injury (well not really ), I will add this question: Has anyone here painted rosewood before? -As in sealer, paint and clearcoats?

I figure it would be pretty hard to paint, considering all the oils in it(?). Would it work with just the usual sanding, filler, etc, or would it have trouble sticking?

it's be no different from painting something as porous as mahogany. just grain fill, then move on with your priming, painting, etc.
