Re: New SL2H w/ cardboard under the nut??????

I think his point was that on a $1000 + guitar, a cardboard shim under the nut is a little shoddy.
I agree, it is. Just because "everybody does it", and "that's how it's done", that don't make it right.

it's kind of like buying a new car and finding a soup can strapped around the exhaust pipe.

I am starting to feel a little less silly about the shim thing. Although I guess it's not really as big a deal as I thought.

Oh-yeah, Chuck I used your trem blocking concept and deviated it a bit, thanks for the help. Here is the link:

I agree shims are a necessary evil at times , but cardboard?!?!. I would be less upset if were a piece of brass , steel shim stock or even piece of wood. But cardboard on a $1000.00 + guitar is pretty F'n lame.I would except to see that on a cheap @ss import but not a USA made guitar.

More than likely the 'problem' is the variance in the wood of the guitar neck, not being 100% standardized and the exact same from guitar to guitar. However, I have seen real Floyd Rose locking nuts that vary in height, by as much as 1/16th! Doesn't seem like much, but that is a huge amount. I changed hardware from chrome to gold, all original Floyd parts, and had to shim the gold nut, but not the chrome one. Cardboard is lame, especially on a (pushing) $2000 guitar. They purpose build brass shims every day. Jackson used to use this neat phenolic board material back in the San Dimas days, even that would be better than sharpied cardboard.

Can you read on the cardboard if it's from a corn flakes box or something?

I had a PS4 neck on a Warrior MG body... the Floyd nut was shimmed with cardboard. I don't know if it was done by the factory or the person I got it from. All I know is it needed to be shimmed up a tiny bit more, so I put a little more carboard in there from a business card. It did the job, the same as metal or plastic or anything else you'd use for a shim.

The point is, cardboard? On THAT spendy of a guitar?
Yes, it works...that's not in debate. It's the "class" factor that's sorely lacking.

i agree that it's a little on the tacky side, but if i wasn't someone who had guitar tech knowledge, i wouldn't know about it, or probably really care too much, ya know?

I suppose it is a bit aggravating because it is brand new from a dealer, almost 2G's.

I have simply never seen a USA Select from Jackson with cardboard under the nut, hell I've never seen a new import with cardboard under the nut. Although I suppose that doesn't mean it can't happen.

I suppose I need to stop pissing and moaning now and suck it up.

heh.... now here's the other end of the spectrum.

this is a proper shim. 4 of them, actually!

this to me, is a case of not using the proper nut; instead of a real floyd r3 nut, this is a licensed version (which yes, is stock). this is a usa made bc rich stIII.

                              crazy, eh?
