• rosewood-izing ebony?

hey all,

with all the recent ebonizing threads, i'm starting to feel bad for my friend, the rosewood fretboard. so, has anyone here ever tried to rosewoodize ebony? how 'bout mapleizing? can poplar or basswood be alderized? or mahoganized?

see, i've got this 1971 les paul custom that i used in the kiss trib band. it's not minty at all, and i think that while the cherry sunburst is cool, it would look better with a maple board. so i've got some naptha, and a great wood bleach that i picked up at a high end lumber store nearby. i figure that i'll have to bleach it a few times to lighten the ebony enough, and then once it's really white, i can hit it with my trusty ol' "golden oak" tinted danish oil. i've also got a nice rosewood stain, but i don't think i'll use that, as it would tint the inlays, and the danish oil won't.

whaddya think? i'll probably start on it soon, and i'll post lotsa pix!

I want to chesswood-ize my Gibson. I'm running into walls trying to figure out how to do it though.

I think your nuts bro. lol I have a nice Soloist that has a rosewood board. While I'd prefer ebony for looks I just can't bring myself to ruin a perfectly good piece of rosewood. But a lot of people can't stand the color of rosewood on Jackson axes.
We must!
We must!
We must increase the bust!

I wanted to flame-ize some of my straight-grain necks so I doused them with ether and lit them on fire.

It worked.

Cool! We don't have any "high end lumber stores" in these parts, so we just use paint. Krylon has all the tonewoods you could want. Brown for rosewood, black for ebony and yellow for maple (dot with a pencil eraser while it's still wet to add birdseye, or swab with a Kleenex for flame). Mix and match for a truly custom piece (e.g., ebony to the octave, then maple to the 24th fret)! Go for it, and don't forget to post pics of your work!

Be specific, Sully. Indian or Brazilian rosewood? There's different techniques for each. And, personally, I'm interested in pao ferro-izing some ebony. So if anyone has any tips...

Also, I've heard that if you break up a viagra pill and mix a little in with some ebony dust, that'll harden up your rosewood 'board to the texture of ebony.
