A slightly oversize hole or undersize bushing is usually the cause....

And yes, you have to heat it for a bit more than a few seconds, but you should be able to safely pull the stud in well under a minute

[ QUOTE ]
what i'm wondering is WHAT can cause the bushing to pop out, other than pulling upwards like crazy on the whammy bar ........... ?????

[/ QUOTE ]

When you were doing the setup, did you keep the bridge on while changing strings and change all the strings at once? If so, when you loosen the strings, the trem springs are no longer countered by the strings, and all the force is placed on the bridge which is then transferring an upward force on the trem posts. If the bushings are only a little loose, they can easily pull up when the strings are loosened.

^ which is pretty equivalent to pulling up on the whammy bar really hard.

....and still pulling even though the trem bottomed out a long time ago
