Re: 18v EMG system

Here again, we will have the discussion of the definitive metal guitar... EMGs wired with 27V in series with many 27V in parallel to last forever. Your guitar body will be ENTIRELY made out of battery packs glued together and wired in series and parallel, providing the ULTIMATE METAL MELTDOWN!!! Your sound will PEEL YOUR FACE AND RIP YOUR TESTICLES OFF!!!!!

Re: 18v EMG system

When I converted my Charvel 7-up to 18 volts something unusual happened. I plugged her into my Laney PL100 on the clean channel and the amp automatically switched to the gain channel and the guitar started playing Battery by Metallica.

Any """metalguitar""" should automatically do that when plugged in for the first time.

NO seriously now, I'm not too sure James had his Gibson rigged to 18v while recording MOP. I'll try and dig in some mags to see.

I am not even sure he used EMG's for Master of Puppets.

He swapped them somewhere around that album. Either just before, or just after.

Edit: BTW I can't believe I don't remember this, I'm growing weak and forgetful...

Edit2: He swapped the EMG's in, somewhere doing the MOP tour (rather late) and had the EMG's on his ESP's standard.. His King V had EMG's in it and Kirk's '85 RR had EMG's in it as well.

Did Metallica have their EMGs at 18v? James used dual 81s at the time, then later switched to the 60 as his neck pup. Kirk's RR has an 81 in the bridge and an H (single coil in humbucking housing) in the neck. Other than that, I believe Kirk's used all 81s except for some S or SA models in his Strats.
Didn't James use a Duncan Invader on MOP or Ride The Lightning?

Yeah, Jam he used SD's, that I'm sure about. Not sure if it was the invader.

I heard one of his old Flying Vs had an Invader, but I can't recall. Might have been the Epiphone or whatever V copy it was.

It wasn't even an Epiphone, it was a real low-budget V-copy, not even sure it had a name. But he modded it a bit and he loved it, fair enough.

Man, I plugged my 81 into a wall outlet... It was quite cool, till my strings melted to my hand... But talk about tone before that happened, wow...

18 Volts all the way....

Wouldn't that be more like 110 volts for the win?

I got a new battery clip, and connected two 9volters in series, and now I get half the regular output. I'm pretty darn sure they are in series? Any advice? ARgh

Hmm, let me start by I am terrible at electronics. But when you use this mod you start with 2 fresh 9V batteries right? Because if you don't you might get less than desirable results.

Re: 18v EMG system

i've been using the 18v setup in my rhoads pro for a couple years now. and love it.
but can anyone here, describe the difference in sound in a way that an idiot could understand.
so far my best explanation is: more headroom, more articulate, and easier pinch harmonics.
and then i get asked what is "headroom".

how would YOU describe the difference?
